Mingun is a small countryside village, located on the western bank of the Irrawaddy river, just 10 km north of Mandalay. It was chosen by many Kings in the past as the place to construct remarkable monuments and pagodas, making it equally famed to other ancient cities in Mandalay such as Innwa, Amarapura and Sagaing.
The site can be reached by ferryboats from Gawwein jetty in Mandalay. Normally, it takes 1 hour for upstream boat and 40 minutes for downstream boat. Mingun is famous for many Buddhist shrines monuments, pagodas and huge ancient bell of great historical values and cultural importance. A boat trip to Mingun is leisurely and pleasant, bringing with you plenty of views and thoughts of the local life along the river.
Apart from the boat trip across to Irrawaddy, Mingun is accessible overland, via Sagaing. The distance of 15 km from Sagaing would take you at least 30 minutes.
